Colstey to Bury Ditches

Had a couple of hours spare this afternoon so popped over to Colstey Red Wood for a quick burn up to Sunny Hill upon which you find the magnificent Bury Ditches Hill Fort. Well worth a visit if you haven’t been. It can be reached via a much shorter route from the other side but this 6.5 mile ‘there and back’ route is a firm favorite.

The forestry tracks are wide. There are a few crossings but just keep choosing ‘up hill’ at every intersection and eventually you pick up the Shropshire Way near the top and also a red and blue walking route.

You end up entering the fort at the ‘bum end’ but you wont be disappointed, it is a stunning site. There is a trig in the inner enclosure and an information board at the far end (the main entrance).

Oh and if you go on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, make a short detour south to the little hamlet of Guilden Down for tea and cake.
